Renard. Stainless steel

Originally published in Amsterdam in 1715 and reissued in 1792 by Jan Barend Elwe, this map employs a North Pole-centered azimuthal projection – conceived during the Enlightenment, when Europe sought a unified and rational vision of the world.
Unlike earlier navigation charts, its geometry is grounded in trigonometric calculation and scientific observation. Yet it remains enriched by the decorative language of the Baroque era: elaborate cartouches, allegorical figures, mythological references.
For the first time, a map synthesized the known extent of the modern world – incorporating recent oceanic discoveries while delineating continental boundaries with unprecedented rigor.
Where art and science converge into a single expression of human knowledge.
